This study describes the use of the diminutive value of the suffix -ão in Portuguese, either in the European variant, in whose non-standard language is more attested, or in the Brazilian variant, in which it has small use. As the identity of a language is not confined to the common language, but includes its diatopic, diastractic, diaphasic and diachronic manifestations, dialectal sources of the European Portuguese were explored, since they support the occurrence of the suffix with a diminutive value (cf. pontão ‘little bridge [ponte] over a brook, small viaduct on roads’; ribeirão ‘water course smaller than a river and greater than a stream’), which is also present in other Romance languages. The structural and historical conditions of the occurrence of this Romance pattern in the Lusitanian language are analyzed. Although diminutive value of -ão is less represented, being clearly peripheral today, it has relevant repercussions on the implications that the duplicity of ‘diminution’ and ‘augmentation’ have for the status of evaluative suffixes and for one of major foundations of constructional and cognitive morphology: the pairing between semantic structure and phonological structure. A solution compatible with this principle and the semantic duality of -ão will be proposed
