Hundreds of visitors waited in line, often for hours, to enter the Centre Pompidou. The reviewers were enthusiastic. Even Le Monde, a paper which has not been particularly friendly to Germany in the past few years, wrote: This exhibition has a significance which could be termed historic. What's the meaning of this euphoria? I wouldn't term it euphoria but instead enormous astonishment. Suddenly we French no longer find what we regarded as our identity. We see that we were very similar to the Germans when we were killing each other, and very far apart from each other when we drew closer. We feel very close to their past and as they do quite distant from the recent past. So that the connections which existed between Paris and Berlin only now become clear to the exhibit visitor
