it T ARKET gardening' is the I\VII term applied to the intensive type of vegetable production often found at the fringe of urban areas.2 This traditionally market orientated location is partly the result of the perishable nature of many vegetables which necessitates their production in regions with quick access to the urban areas which serve as their markets. But also of great significance is the need to extend marketing over as long a period as possible so that frequent, regular trips to market with small consignments is the general pattern. The costs of such a procedure become prohibitive as distance from market increases. A third important locational factor is the desirability of personal contact between grower and merchant or retailer. This is probably more vital with respect to the marketing of vegetables, the quality of which can be so variable, than of any other agricultural product
