HE accepted view of the financial and monetary history of the American colonies needs revision. It owes too much to the influence of nineteenth-century scholars who were themselves partisans in currency disputes. In their own day, William G. Sumner, Albert S. Bolles, Charles J. Bullock, and Andrew M. Davis stood for sound against inflationist movements. One of their chief aims was to show the disastrous effects of wandering off the straight line of a sound-money policy.'
