In this research, we approached the variation between botar and colocar in the popular speech of Fortaleza - CE, in apparent time, with the sense of accommodating, enrolling, arresting and denouncing. Based on the theoretical-methodological assumptions of Variationist Sociolinguistics, we analyzed the effect of linguistic (semantic trait and object animacy, (in)determination of the subject, speaker's role, discursive topic) and extralinguistic (gender, age and education) variables on use of the verb to botar. To carry out this, we selected speech data extracted from the NORPOFOR database (Oral Norm do Portuguese Popular de Fortaleza), using only the type of record DID (Dialogue between Informant and Documenter). The GoldVarb X program counted 102 occurrences, 72 (70.6%) for putting and 30 (29.4%) for placing. The groups of factors schooling, age, discursive topic and role of the speaker were selected as relevant for the verb to put, in that order. It was found that women use the verb botar more, with 78.6%, than men, with 60.90
