Iosif Djugashvili first used the pseudonym by which he became famous on December 1, 1912, when he signed article in the Bolsheviks' St. Petersburg newspaper Pravda as K. Stalin.1 His biographers generally point out that the name is based on the Russian word for steel (cmazb) and hence was meant to signify that Djugashvili-Stalin was a man of steel.2 Robert C. Tucker further argues that Djugashvili intended the name to indicate his likeness to the similarly pseudonymed founder and leader of Bolshevism, Lenin.3 Tucker's inference is integral element of his thesis that the Georgian, from childhood driven to see himself as a great hero, came not only to identify with Lenin, but to form a private inner cult of a hyphenate Lenin-Stalin. This hero-identification with Lenin supposedly gave Stalin an inner compass by which he would try to steer for the rest of his days and disposed him to 'do a Lenin' at every critical juncture.4 While its psychological dimension is innovative
