rT _HAT quintessential theater, the court, is the center and perennial emblem of the universe. Meticulously ordered according -to the rules of a representation which is both pleasing and serious, it is staffed by nobles, loyal scribes dedicated to the expression of devotion to the prince, minstrels, ladies-in-waiting, maids, jesters, and household servants. While the throne is surrounded by famous guests and traveling artists summoned for years or for a single season, the smell from the royal stables permeates the living quarters. And the protocol of quotidian gestures (eating, dressing, speaking, reading, and, of course, being born, loving, or dying) intermingles with music, painting, poetry, and history, a form of eloquence and of what we now call science, both of which were then included in the category artes
