The editors of the Cambridge University Press's Studies in North American Indian History promise the series will “exemplify new approaches to the Native American past” (p. iii). With Allan Greer's Property and Dispossession that promise is fulfilled. For readers, of course, there is no mystery that the end result of the European invasion of North America was the dispossession of the lands of indigenous people. However, Greer offers a comparative study of the similarities and dissimilarities of that process by different European empires from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. “The practical business of dispossessing natives and remaking American space as colonial property and state,” he writes, “had fallen to Europeans on the spot: explorers, conquerors, priests, administrators, settlers, magistrates, soldiers, and others who came and gave tangible meaning to the concepts of ‘New Spain,’ ‘New France’ and ‘New England.’ By and large, it was they who constructed colonial jurisdictions, distributed land, and developed tenure practices within their respective enclaves; they also expanded those enclaves, eating ever further into indigenous territories” (p. 358
