XAVIER OAULLIER In order to understand the crisis of the welfare state and of the old age welfare state in particular, the author analyzes the development of old age as a social risk since the second world war. He demonstrates how the paradigm of old age emerged and culminated during the economic boom of the postwar decades (pensions, careers, lifestyles, social identity), how it has progressively evolved and its current focus. He considers that the central issue related to old age as a social risk at each period in time revolves around the allocation of resources (work, leisure time, income...) all through life and that there is a definite trend toward flexible careers, flexible retirement, and a welfare pluralism : a new kind of time and age management questions the social contract
