Mauritania had been under the influence of France since the late nineteenth century, culminating in 1903, when it became a French colony (1903-1960). The process of transforming the French colonial empire in the second half of the 1950s led to autonomy, and then, to full independence of the country. Such a course of action was opposed by Morocco (a French protectorate from 1912-1956), which introduced the broad irredentist programme. The government in Rabat considered Mauritania a part of its territory and launched a diplomatic offensive aimed at gaining support in the international arena as of Mauritania’s independence in 1960. Thanks to the USSR’s support during the fifteenth un session, Mauritania’s candidacy for this organisation was rejected. However, the backstage negotiations resulted in accession of Mauritania to the United Nations the following year. The negating attitude of Morocco resulted in isolation and poor relations between this country and many African states. The aim herein is to examine thoroughly the genesis, development and further evolution of Mauritanian and Moroccan relations within the international context. In order to make the research as objective as possible, sources analysed include press and scientific publications in French, English and Russian, as well as declassified documents from the Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Republic of Poland in Warsaw, which offer a wider approach to this problem from the perspective of the Eastern Bloc
