The essay examines the changing dynamic between science and politics by considering the evolution of the highest academic honor in China. Academic Department membership in the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was established as a position of scientific leadership. Now, CAS membership is China's highest academic designation, a lifetime honor rewarding Chinese scientists who have made significant contributions to the development of the nation's science and technology. Through analyzing this evolution--the early influence of the former Soviet Union, the persecution of the membership in various political campaigns, the rehabilitation of the system after the Cultural Revolution, the formal introduction of an honorific mechanism--the essay shows how politics has affected the institutionalization of scientific activity in twentieth-century China
