THE CHARACTERS in this book are imaginary and bear no relation to any living person except the author. This statement, which stands on the front page of a novel called Natalie Natalia, by Nicholas Mosley, might be understood by the reader as either a rationalization or a parody of the modern novel's process. Making such things clear, in one way or another, has become for the novel a kind of kidding on the level. In fact the proffered ploy of an irony and an artifice is swallowed up from beneath by the actuality of the dominating consciousness, which seeks to formalize and impersonalize itself by this kind of protocol
