Este artigo introduz o conceito de construção espontânea de uma nação, concebido como uma série de eventos que podem ser considerados como ferramentas de construção de nações, mesmo não tendo sido concebidos com esse objetivo. Neste sentido, abordam-se aqui duas questões relativamente pouco estudadas na construção das identidades. Em primeiro lugar, o facto de a investigação sobre a construção das nações, particularmente na antiga URSS, se ter concentrado maioritariamente em “ferramentas tradicionais” e indicadores como policy-making. O presente artigo sugere a emergência de novas ferramentas e estratégias que não foram conceptualizadas até agora. Em segundo lugar, o facto de a maior parte da bibliografia sobre construção de nações partir de um relato exclusivamente centrado na elite e focado no Estado. Embora reconhecendo a importância de iniciativas estatais e institucionais, este artigo visa salientar a importância analítica da interação do Estado com iniciativas não estatais ou aquelas em que os atores tradicionais da construção de nações têm um papel partilhado
