J. Bureau - A Diachronic Survey of Two Gamo Titles. The integration of the Gamo into Menelik's empire led to a promotion of the ka'o traditional leaders to the important political function of balabbat. After one or two generations the titles and/or functions of ka'o and balabbat have been dissociated. They no longer are - as in 1898 -the privilege of a single man: while remaining within the ka'o's clan they are devolved to two persons. On the one hand, the ka'o is not supposed to be an actor in 'hot' politics, reserved for the assemblies. On the other hand, if he were to assume political functions he would become dangerous for the Gamo democratie System of government by assemblies
