J AVA merits its reputation of being one of the most beautiful islands of the world. The combination of lowlands, hills, and mountains-of which the large volcanic cones are most spectacular-the luxurious vegetation, the colorful population, the excellent system of railroads, and motorcar roads, which cross the island in all directions, and comfortable hotels, make Java a favorite field of the world traveler. His interest in the island increases considerably if he understands the intricate system of economic activity which combines so cleverly the interests of natives and white men. Java, through many centuries of colonial efforts, has become a model of colonization technique; mistakes have been made, many injustices done, but the final outcome is satisfactory. One of the most interesting sides of the colonization is that of land utilization. The combination of subsistence agriculture to support the island's teeming population, with extensive commercial plantation agriculture on a scale rarely attained elsewhere, offers one of the most interesting examples of scientific land utilization displayed anywhere. The following pages will bring the geographical description and interpretation of that agricultural development
