Archaeology of the early Church invariably entails a consideration of its works of art. However, the nature of such a church is almost impossible to objectify (indeed, is often defined by way of its art) — a fact which compromises any analysis where this is not clearly conceded. With reference to the early Church in Roman Britain, it is maintained that belief is the only obvious intrinsic quality of a church in archaeology; and, correspondingly, that artistic creativity, as it is considered within the whole cultural context, is of the utmost importance to the archaeologist who wishes to interpret such a church's influence and character
