Descontinuidades epistemológicas nas Teorias da Comunicação

A pergunta “o que é uma teoria da Comunicação” é tema recorrente na epistemologia, e receberespostas diferentes conforme os critérios utilizados para definir se, e em que medida, uma teoria está relacionadaou não à área de Comunicação. A partir da análise de obras diretamente dedicadas ao tema publicadas noBrasil entre 1969 e 2011, este texto identifica e delineia três momentos de mudança na taxonomia da Teoriada Comunicação: (a) as definições do que seria “teoria” para a então recém-constituída área, anos 1960;(b) a taxonomia baseada em “escolas teóricas” nos anos 1990; e (c) o crescimento da área e das discussõesepistemológicas a partir de anos 2000. Essas mudanças são relacionadas com o contexto institucional eepistemológica procurando discutir algumas condições dessas mudanças.Palavras-chave: Epistemologia. Teoria da Comunicação. Pesquisa. Instituições. Abstract: The growth of media and communication research area seems to have raised an epistemologicalproblem concerning what kind of theories could support such investigations. The question ‘what is acommunication theory?’ has found a number of different answers according to the criteria employed to definewhether a theory is related to communication. This paper examines the specialized literature published inBrazil under this title from 1969 to 2011 to outline three shifts in the taxonomy of communication theory:(a) the definitions of what would be ‘theory’ for the newly constituted area in the 1960s; (b) the taxonomy of‘schools’ from 1990 to 2000s; (c) the rise of epistemological concerns in the 2000s.
