Boom and Bust in the Colonial Chesapeake Economy A major theme in the recent scholarship of the colonial Chesapeake is the notion of boom and bust-the idea that throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the tobacco economy experienced continuing cycles of prosperity and depression. Tobacco was central to Chesapeake society, and few would question the importance of knowing what mechanisms governed its economy. Yet beyond asserting that tobacco dominated the Chesapeake economy, historians until now have never offered any overall, systematic interpretation. In the absence of any established scheme, the conceptually simple and rhetorically powerful idea of boom and bust has taken hold with little critical evaluation
