The labor market in the USSR long has constituted a source of interest to Westerners. Information on its organization and actual operation has been sparse and often confusing. In this article, based on observations and interviews during a thirty-day stay in the Soviet Union and on intensive perusal of Soviet publications, Professor Brown supplies an original and much-desired description and appraisal of the Russian labor market today.
