Using Manuscript Census Samples to Interpret Antebellum Southern Agriculture The manuscript censuses of agriculture and population for the nineteenth century have proven valuable in a wide range of historical research. Although extreme care has been taken by most researchers who have drawn and used samples, concerns are intermittently raised about the representativeness and validity of the manuscripts and data sets and about the way in which they have been utilized. The latter problem is typically one of interpretation or statistical technique and is unlikely to disappear. Our concern, however, is with the general and specific procedures followed in sample development and the unnecessary confusion that arises when rules are not followed or communicated to later scholars.
