This article explores what it means to locate the African subject at the intersection between colonial governmentality and the realm of subjective desires. It discusses the process by which Africans cultivated their identity as modern subjects both within and against the institutions of colonial rule. Using one unique colonial subject (Jomo Kenyatta) as its case study, the essay tries to understand what happens when we read Africa - and the African - through acts of cultural translation and negotiation, through a lexicon that emerged not simply as the opposition between colonial modernity and African traditionalism, but one produced at that liminal scene where the self becomes the other and the lines between the two are blurred or folded. The central concern of the article is the movement of African subjects through the anatomy of colonialism and their meticulous translation of colonial culture into the idiom of self-making
