The Linkage of Historical Records by Man and Computer: Techniques and Problems The publication of Stephan Thernstrom's Progress and Poverty in I964 stimulated a remarkable increase in the practice of historical record linkage. Yet few of the practitioners are looking critically at what amounts to their fundamental historical technique. This paper has the modest objective of bringing the existence of historical record linkage, its techniques, and problems out into the open. It makes no claims to having solved all of the relevant problems or to having covered all of the relevant material. It reports our experience to date in an on-going study, the Hamilton Project, under the direction of Michael B. Katz at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.'
