Mercenary wetnursing in rural France is examined in terms of its role in the families that supplied the wetnurses. Data are from vital registration for the commune of Marlhes in the Stephanois region of France during the nineteenth century. The evidence allows consideration of three points of intersection between wetnursing and the families of Marlhes: the economic role of wetnursing especially in poorer families; the relationship between nurslings and the births and deaths of their freres de lait; and the attitudes of these families toward their own children.
