The Russian music profession emerged through a conscious attempt bythe Russian Musical Society(RMO) to create the institutions and legal framework to support it. Although the process of musical professionalization in Russia had much in common with that in Western Europe, the peculiarities of Russian social, political, and cultural life stronglyshaped the character of the Russian musical profession. RMO conserva-tories and music schools were dominated bystudents, particularlywomen and Jews, who did not fit the preconceived ideal of the professional musician, complicating the RMO's professionalization project. An examination of class, gender, and ethnicityin the shaping of the Russian musical profession highlights the interaction between the broader processes of social evolution and the narrower musical developments.
