L ITTLE is known of the early relationships between the French and Amerindians in North America.1 Giovanni da Verrazzano (1524) and Jacques Cartier (1534-1541), both hired by the king of France, were among the first Europeans to exchange gifts with and to provide detailed descriptions of the indigenous peoples of the Northeast. For the decades following Cartier's expeditions, scholars are faced with a veritable terra incognita, to borrow the expression that appears on the maps of the period. No further documentation attests to French (much less Amerindian) activity in the Northeast until the seventeenth century, beginning with Marc Lescarbot's superb account of Pierra De Gua de Mont's voyages in Histoire de la Nouvelle France (i609) and Samuel de Champlain's narratives (beginning in i603) as well as the earliest travel narratives of the Jesuits (i6i2).2 Only then does the
