From time to time health workers may wish to examine the historical development of some health problem, or of a field of health endeavor. An awareness of the methods available for historical investigation at the present time is usually lacking in such situations. Notions derived from an earlier period are still quite prevalent. For this reason the volume edited by Dr. Clarke may be useful to those with some interest in health matters. Various approaches to health data are considered, among them the investigation of disease in the past and present, the analysis of demographic data, the use of automation, maps, oral history, the graphic representation of information, the study of ideas and a number of other topics. This volume should certainly be available in schools of public health, medicine, nursing, social work, and in other educational institutions having to do with health. GEORGE ROSEN
