AREFUL students of politics have long postulated an important relationship between social structure and political structure. To understand any political system, it is argued, one must also have some knowledge of the social environment in which it functions. In recent years there has been considerable interaction between students of society (sociologists) and students of politics (political scientists). Modern political science has developed a commitment to the utilization of interdisciplinary approaches and has borrowed freely from the methods, concepts and theories of sociology. Similarly, sociologists have concerned themselves with questions of power, elites, and other related problems which were formerly considered the exclusive domain of the political scientist. The attempts meaningfully to relate sociology and political science in the study of man's social environment have stimulated the collection of large masses of empirical data as well as the generation of new hypotheses and the development of new theories. A new field political sociology has emerged, reflecting at once the blurring in the lines that traditionally separated the disciplines and the fruitfulness of the marriage of these two traditional areas
