The New Political History and the Election of I840 The Log Cabin and Hard Cider election of I840 surely must rank as one of the most interesting and significant in United States history. Voter turnout, low in the early national period, had been rising steadily in presidential elections, and crested stunningly at over 80 percent. The Democrats and especially the Whigs employed techniques of campaigning and citizen mobilization never seen before. An egalitarian style triumphed decisively as the previously aloof Whigs imitated the Jackson Democrats' common man approach, nominated an Indian fighter and aging general, and, chanting Tippecanoe and Tyler Too, transformed the not very consequential William Henry Harrison into an icon. They succeeded in turning the campaign into a mixture of religious revival, folk festival, and mass entertainment. For the first time, too, a financial panic (1837) and ensuing hard times caused many voters to hold Van Buren's national administration responsible for depressed economic conditions and punish it by turning it out of office
