Mexico's Population in the Sixteenth Century: Demographic Anomaly or Mathematical Illusion? The size of the pre-Conquest population of central Mexico and the extent to which this population declined during the first I00 years of Spanish rule are issues that have generated fascinating descriptions and passionate polemics. Since the late I940s, however, new studies of all available contemporary documents have been carried out at the University of California. These studies, of unprecedented scope and sophistication, have reached revolutionary conclusions, which estimate figures for the pre-Conquest population of central Mexico and for its subsequent decline far higher than ever suggested before. The results of these studies were published first by Cook and Simpson and then, from the late I950s, by Cook and Borah.' The most recent and complete summary of the population figures estimated by Borah and Cook is as follows
