S TUDIES of the experience of American women during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries describe a woman's sphere of domesticity-the narrow realm of hearth and cradlestanding in marked contrast to the broad stage of public affairs on which men operated. Adopting this perspective in a pathbreaking article two decades ago, Barbara Welter defined the cult of true womanhood in antebellum America.1 Reaching back into the previous century, historians have extended but not questioned or significantly modified Welter's depiction of restrictions on female powers, opportunities, and options.2 The Revolutionary era, according to Linda K. Kerber and Nancy F. Cott, brought a degree of broadening of the female world, but these gains soon proved transitory.3 It is thus the conventional historical wisdom that while men could make their way in the areas of economic enterprise, politics, or the learned professions, women remained in the home. Within its walls they found both a safe haven and a paternalistic form of confinement.4
