Twenty Thousand Muskets

IN the i 820S Paul-Jean-Francois-Nicolas, vicomte de Barras, who thirty years earlier had been one of the most powerful men in France, wrote a memoir of the French Revolution and its aftermath. He recalled his rise to membership in the Directory that ruled France from November I795 until Bonaparte's coup in I799. Working from masses of notes, correspondence, and state documents, Barras told of his work in the Convention, his role in the Terror, his part in overthrowing Robespierre, and his years on the Directory, all laced with vitriolic criticism of his contemporaries and colleagues. In this self-serving, fascinating reminiscence of France's tumultuous years of revolution and counterrevolution, Robespierre, the Terror, and Napoleon share space with people and events already faded into obscurity. Sifting through his papers, Barras selected a minor incident of July I796 to exemplify the troublesome questions the Directory had faced on a day-to-day basis
