That Jos6 Marti, poet, essayist, and ap6stol of Cuban independence was a sincere champion of equality and a penetrating critic of racism has been pointed out by a number of contemporary writers.' That Marti's raciological liberalism stands out in sharp contrast with the attitudes of a significant group of Spanish American essayists of the 1890's and early years of the present century has, however, seldom been emphasized.
