While the Comaroffs' work sometimes attracts the label of 'postmodernist,' their use of ethnographic and historical data is in fact convincingly empirical. Their analytic framework, however, is often rendered in impressionistic fashion, as when their evidence for resistance is predicated on loose assumptions. They contribute to the analysis of the ethnography of Europe, notably in a critique of homogenizing stereotypes of European 'individualism,' but here too their indisputably original contribution to the anthropology of Europe would benefit from engagement with anthropological research on European societies, as would our understanding of the category of 'colonialism' and related essentialisms from such an extension of their largely implicit comparativism
