In search of a national identity in Alsace (1870-1918). If one studies the question of Alsatian national identity between 1870 and 1918, one goes beyond the simple opposition between the French idea of nation and the German conception of Volk. Alsatian identity is the resuit of an on-going social, political and cultural process and not of a spontaneous feeling
