L'A. commente l'ouvrage de Susan Reynolds « Fiefs and Vassals : the Medieval Evidence Reinterpreted » , qui consiste en une remise en cause du concept meme de feodalite. Selon l'A., ce concept pourrait ne pas avoir ce caractere universel et operationnel qui lui est reconnu pour l'Occident medieval. La critique de S. Reynolds est principalement axee sur le rapport fief/vassal, qui n'aurait pas implique de subordination militaire avant le douzieme siecle. S. Reynolds s'est attachee a montrer l'apparition de la notion de feodalite comme modele commode pour rendre compte des changements politiques importants ayant eu lieu apres la desintegration de la societe carolingienne
