If there is one thing that both sides of the generation gap could agree upon, it would probably be the importance of childhood experience to the development of the individual and of society. And, although professional historians have long neglected the history of the child, and of the cultural construct the publication record of the past several years is evidence of a surge of interest in this field.I This note will cite the literature in English which relates to the history of childhood, listing existing bibliographies and other works that have escaped them or call for special notice. It will not be possible, however, to take account of the stream of works on the plight of today's youth-the stuff of which historical studies will be made in years to come. Older attempts at writing the history of childhood and youth are often of great interest because of what they indicate about the attitudes characteristic of the time of their writing. Of course, few of the older histories attack the problems to which social historians are now addressing themselves. One is tempted to say that it was only with such recent works as Edmund S. Morgan's The Puritan Family: Religion and Domestic Relations in Seventeenth
