Peasants are popularly characterized as relatively passive pawns of external forces. In the burgeoning studies literature however the image is now emerging of peasants who do enjoy a degree of decision-making power over their own lives but their options are still limited because they comprise a distinctly subordinate component in the larger agrarian system. This perspective has led not only to a much greater emphasis on the real locus of control in an agrarian society but also to reconsiderations of peasant behavior as is suggested by Liptons notion of the optimizing peasant. This paper stresses the optimizing character of peasants on the move in the Saran district in the northeastern Indian province of Bihar in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In examining this historical phenomenon of internal and especially seasonal migration the focus here is on the adaptations migrating peasants made in their own lives in their communities of origin and in their communities of destination.
