There is little chance that the railroad firemen will win the current struggle with American railroad management to retain their place in the cabs of diesel locomotives in freight and yard service. This is the major conclusion of this article which describes the background of the diesel firemen issue, summarizes the findings and recommendations of a Canadian Royal Commission which recently investigated this issue on the Canadian Pacific Railway, and appraises the factors that may influence the result on American railroads.
