As they have grown big in membership and bargaining power, trade unions have also expanded in terms of financial resources. It is estimated that their total assets may amount to as much as a billion dollars. What do unions do with their funds? How are they invested? In this article, Professor Belfer analyzes tee distribution of union assets and discusses the experience of unions with particular types of investments. He also makes some suggestions as to how unions might better manage their portfolios. Nathan Belfer is assistant professor of economics, The Pennsylvania State College.
