L'A. se demande pourquoi les Britanniques boivent peu de cafe. Il s'efforce de comprendre leur attitude en ce domaine. Il presente un certain nombre de donnees collectees concernant les importations de cafe entre 1699 et 1774. Il compare les prix du cafe et du the entre, d'une part, 1664 et 1715 et, d'autre part, 1810 et 1860. Il envisage les importations de ces deux produits entre 1704 et 1784. Il tente de saisir pourquoi la consommation de cafe s'est effondree au debut du 18 e siecle dans ce pays
