I remember the first time Reetika came to my office at the University of Virginia: A new student in the MFA Writing Program, she already had one book and several prizes under her belt—the Discovery Award from The Nation magazine, and the Barnard New Women Poets Prize for her first book, White Elephants. There she sat before me—petite but fierce, hands folded in her lap but a passionate intelligence shining from those eyes. Through all the transformations in our eight-year relationship—from student/teacher to young poet/mentor to friends and colleagues—those eyes shone out with a clear, invigorating joy
