The eras of Modernism and of Postmodernism are eras of conceptual, existential, and technological transition. Both in the years between the 1880s and the 1930s, and the years between the 1930s and the 1980s, cultural critics have been embarrassed by the proliferation of the new; by ways of conceiving cultural reality, ways of evaluating existence, and ways of mechanizing cultural reality.' These periods of intertextual crisis2 afflict both the creator and the critic alike. As Laszl6 Moholy-Nagy intimated in Vision in Motion (1947), the dilemma of Modernist culture derives from the difficulties of working within the new of science and a technology which could be used for the realization of all-embracing relationships.3 According to Moholy-Nagy, Contemporary man threw himself into the experience of these relationships. But saturated with old ideologies, he approached the dimension with obsolete practices and failed to translate newly gained experience into emotional language and cultural reality. (Vision, 10)
