Modernity

Modernity may be viewed as embodying (1) an acute species of egalitarian classlessness or (2) the popular legitimation of a socio‐political hierarchy steeper than any hitherto known. While modernity approximates in structure to (2), in aspiration it is closer to (1). The tension between the ideal and the real is eased in a degree by differential colouring of the strata constituting an ever‐extending hierarchy. However, (1) and (2) are not opposites, and the condition of black America, for being extreme, speaks directly to the organic tensions of modern identities and statuses: The modern condition is revealed nowehere so graphically as in biography
