This article focuses on the key race relations problems for the indigenous people and ethnic groups in New Zealand today. It describes the ‘new’ dimension in race relations with the arrival of increasing numbers of Asian migrants to New Zealand. With important trade opportunities in Asia and the South Pacific, only now are efforts being made to better implement New Zealand's international obligations under the International Convention for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). Three major changes are proposed which would improve the protection of minorities from racial discrimination in New Zealand and advance the cause of multi‐culturalism
