History Standing the Test of Africa. - History and Theory, a dissertation about 19th-century Madagascar and summaries of 75 writings in French based on oral sources have in common that they show how the writing of African history sheds light on the making of history itself. In African "expressions" of history, past or present, the discipline of history discovers other historical discourses than its own "sources". This discipline, taken as an example of ail the social sciences, expresses the practical interrelations between two fields of interest : on the one hand, representations ; and, on the other, the proliferation of social experiences. It reveals the political nature of what is at issue in "memory" and in the "uttering of history" ; and thus contributes to them
