Massa and Moussa's Water: Regional cuits, local "traditions" and witchcraft in west Africa - Massa and Moussa's Water were two well-known religious cuits during the period of independence throughout a region covering eastern Mali, much of Burkina Faso and the north of both the Ivory Coast and Ghana. Massa innovated on anti-witchcraft cuits whereas the prophet Moussa proposed a miraculous water and demanded that local cuits be given up. The impact of these two movements on peoples in this region and especially on the Sambla, a small Mande-speaking population in western Burkina Faso, is examined. An explanation is given of the diverging interpretations of both cuits by various populations and by political and religious actors in African society at the time (colonial officials, missionaries, and African elites). The relations between regional processes and local religious practices as well as the role of witchcraft in the spread of prophetie movements and religious cuits in western Africa are reconsidered
