This paper explains what is meant by “traditional Cape Dutch” domestic architecture. By correlating findings from archaeological excavation and archival records, and comparing these to earlier research projects, it demonstrates that it is erroneous to look upon early dwellings as merely smaller and simpler versions of the later, “traditional” Cape Dutch House. The earlier dwellings were rooted in the European vernacular and the switch to a more formal, traditional mode of dwelling did not take place until the mid‐1730s. Hypotheses which maintain that traditional Cape Dutch domestic architectural styles were established by the beginning of the 18th century can thus be refuted
