J.-L. Amselle - Migration and Neo-Traditional Society : The Bambara of Jitumu (Mali). Labour migration in today's Africa is a phenomenon totally different from pre-colonial movements of population. Neither can it be completely assimilated to apparently similar phenomena in non-African industrial countries. On the one hand, the migrants' motivations are still closely linked with traditional cultural traits such as the junior/elder relationship. On the other hand, while West Africa actually belongs to the sphere of capitalistic domination, the capitalist mode of production does not really apply in its rural areas. The monetarization of local institutions results in a kind of 'money hunger' which must be taken into account when considering how to withdraw such countries from imperialiste domination
