M. Samake - Kafo and the Power of Limages among the Banmana: Gonkbrabi's Hegemony in Cendugu. In a kafo, each dominant group in this sort of chieftaincy creates the material, ideological and legal conditions for maintaining its supremacy. In a way, kinship defines citizenship and modulates the exercise of power by lineages. A kafo is a fact of both kinship and history. Cendugu, a typical kafo in southern Mali, is one of the many states that, forgotten or minimized by officiai history, represent the continuity of Society, in contradistinction to the modem state. In lineage formations, with which people more easily identify, a peasant political consciousness integrates traditional values (lineage structure and tribalism) and the new ideas conveyed by the nation-state. Knowledge about these formations helps us better understand the political activities of the states born out of colonization
