The consciousness that young Burundians have of history. - Since 1965, Burundi has undergone seven crises involving genocidal massacres committed among two ethnie groups, Hutu and Tutsi. The memory of casualties, the deniai of justice and the forbiddance of any allusion to the ethnie question keeps the psychosis alive during peacetime. On the basis of talks with more than a hundred 18-24 years-old, the effort is made to see how violence has shaped the consciousness of future adults in this country. These young people yearn for a mythical, peaceful past, which the ethnie codification introduced by the colonial power shattered. Like their elders, they refuse to talk about the 1965 and 1972 crises, a refusal motivated by the argument that they had not yet been born. The popularity of the 1988 crisis and the bloody interruption of the democratic process (since October 1993) have marked Burundi youth for a lifetime. These young people have doubts about fundemental principles, such as democracy or the unity of the Burundian people. They condemn politicians who use ethnie issues to advance or sustain their careers, and voice their skepticism about solving the ethnic crisis
